Headaches and migraines are something that we all can suffer with from time to time, but if you suffer from them regularly you may well be looking for a reason behind why these headaches keep occurring. We all hear that dehydration, eyesight issues or stressful times at work or at home can cause headaches, but it may be time to look beyond some of those causes and start paying attention to your posture.

When your posture is incorrect, for example when you’re sat hunched over at a desk, slouching when watching the TV, or even when eating, this can cause biomechanical issues with the structure of your spine especially in the neck. Our spines have an optimal alignment, when in the right place, this gives the spine the ability to distribute the force of gravity evenly on every part of our body. If you’re not paying enough attention to your posture when sitting at a desk or in other daily activities you could be putting more pressure on one area of the body compared to other parts. Headaches can typically feel like compression around the forehead, behind in the eye and at the base of the skull at the back of the neck, the main cause of this is an issue with compression in the neck area.

Slouching causing headaches

Slouching while at your desk or sat on the couch at home can put a huge stress on the bones in the neck but also on the muscles that support them. When you lean your neck forward while sitting at your computer, or even while texting and scrolling through your phone, the weight of your head is then being supported by your neck, upper back and shoulders. When you have correct posture, your spine is more balanced in its weight distribution, with plenty of space between the top of the neck and the base of the skull for nerves and blood vessels to go over the head. Sitting with incorrect posture can constrict those nerves and blood vessels, causing compression of the discs in the cervical spine along with tightening and soreness of muscles in the neck.  When this goes on for an extended period of time, this can result in the discs becoming dehydrated, headaches that become chronic, but also reduced disc space due to the compressive load which in itself can cause radiating pain into the shoulders and between the shoulder blades.

Catching the problem early can reduce headaches

If this problem is caught early on and the headaches occur infrequently, this can be an easier time to rectify the problem. Making the simple adjustment to your posture, and paying more attention to the way that you’re holding your body throughout the day both at work and home, can be enough to rectify the issue.

However, if the problem has caused damage to the cervical spine that has caused the headaches to become more chronic, treatment may be required in order to relieve these headaches. At The Mayfair Clinic we have been able to treat many cases of chronic headaches that occur as a result of a dysfunction in the neck. We will first complete our own assessment of the alignment of the spine which may be followed up with x-rays or MRI scans to verify a diagnosis and determine what kind of problem exists.

Treating the Cause of Headaches

If we believe the headaches have become chronic as a result of misalignment in the spine, this can be targeted using our Spinal Impulse Adjusting technology. This can be used on the spine and the surrounding muscles to help relieve stiffness, tightness and encourage your spine into a more optimal alignment. This therapy can be used along with our spinal orthotics that can be individually prescribed to you at a certain point in your treatment to further the correction of your spine at home. Used daily these orthotics can be used to help correct the curvature of your spine, and therefore relieve the pressure from compromised areas of the spine.

If further testing at our clinic followed by x-ray imaging or MRIs reveal a disc problem in the cervical spine, such as dehydration or a disc bulge, we may decide the best therapy for you in the beginning to be Spinal Decompression. This therapy uses a gentle stretch which is specifically proportioned to your body weight using a high and low setting that relaxes and contracts between those settings over a controlled amount of time. This stretch can feel relieving for anyone suffering with a disc issue, as they may be feeling like their spine is compressed. The gentle relaxing and contracting acts like a pump in the discs to help allow nutrients and hydration back into the discs, this will help relieve the pressure on the spine and put the injured areas in a healthier state to continue healing even after the treatment has been completed.
