Good & bad techniques for reducing neck pain.

There are lots of things we do on a daily basis that causes neck pain or makes neck problems flare up and cause pain.  Things like texting & poor working posture behind a desk can aggravate neck pain and cause stiffness or discomfort. Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind when thinking about the best techniques for reducing neck pain.

Good Techniques For Reducing Neck Pain

  • The neck is supposed to have a natural curve (lordosis) which helps support the neck & keep balance within the spine. Keeping the neck supported well with a pillow that isn’t too soft will help keep the neck supported for the 6-8 hours you spend every night in bed.  This can also help in reducing neck pain by providing a restful and neutral position.
  • If you do suffer from neck pain that is recurrent or comes and goes, regular stretching and strengthening exercises for the neck and surrounding muscles can really help in relieving neck pain.  It is very important that these exercises and stretches are done carefully and slowly to ensure you don’t injure the spine!

Bad Techniques for Reducing Neck Pain

  • Spending prolonged periods of time using iPads or our mobile devices in a position of forwarding bending in the neck puts pressure on the cervical discs (the cushions between the spinal bones).  You also increase the effective weight of the head by holding the head forward for long periods.  like carrying a box with your arms stretched out in front.   This can significantly aggravate the problem causing more neck pain, even if it feels nice for the moment.
  • Carrying heavy shopping bags, briefcases or handbags can put an asymmetrical stress through the spine and aggravate a neck problem.  Try your best not to do too much of this! Only carry what is necessary and try your best to avoid carrying like this if at all possible.

If you are suffering from a more long term issue which is not getting better it is always best to get it checked out possibly, you may well be surprised how quickly it could start to get better with some professional treatment.
