One of the most common questions that we get asked at The Mayfair Clinic, is whether exercises should come at the beginning of the treatment process or even before treatment itself. It is increasingly common that if you seek help on the NHS for back pain, the most frequent responses usually are painkillers or to refer for physiotherapy. While recommending exercises for your back pain can be extremely beneficial in the healing process, it shouldn’t necessarily be the first port of call.

A Common-sense Approach To Injury Treatment

When an injury is fresh, it can be inflamed, and hurt when you try to go about your daily activities, or even when you sleep. So going ahead and doing some exercises to strengthen the area may exacerbate the problem and make the pain worse in the initial stages of healing. If your movement is especially compromised by the injury, you may find yourself unable to do the exercise with the correct form that gives you the most benefit from that exercise, or overcompensating with another area of the body in order to perform it. For this reason, we don’t recommend exercises should come first. One of the most easy ways to explain this, is that imagine a fresh injury is a bit like a rope but the rope is frayed – the last thing you would want to do would be pulling on that rope and potentially cause more damage.

What You Can Expect From Our Treatment Approach

Our approach at The Mayfair Clinic is quite simple. An examination would be done at your first appointment, as well as a diagnosis, x-rays if we think you need them, and a first treatment. We would always prefer to complete a number of treatment sessions with you first, to start the healing process and create the optimal healing environment in your body before recommending some exercises that will strengthen the area for the future. Our treatments here can all individually target areas of the spine that are problematic for you, so if you suffer with anything from a slipped disc to sciatica or spinal stenosis, we can help to relieve the pain and soothe the area in a safe and controlled environment to get your body recovering.

Spinal Decompression Therapy

For disc problems such as a slipped, herniated or bulging disc, degenerative disc disease or sciatica, one of our most beneficial treatments is Spinal Decompression. This treatment uses a proportional amount of your body weight to perform a gentle and controlled stretch. This controlled treatment helps by alleviating the pressure on any compromised area of your spine; commonly either your neck or lower back. The stretching motion allows valuable nutrients in your spine to enter the discs to help the healing environment even after the treatment has been completed, to enable the body to begin its recovery process more effectively.

K-Laser Treatment

For particularly acute or chronic conditions, our K-Laser therapy can help to alleviate pain levels in injuries to help speed up the healing process and can be used in any area of the body. The K-Laser uses light therapy to penetrate at a cell-level to increase the circulation in the damaged area which can help rebuild blood vessels where an injury has taken place to enable the healing process to take place properly – even if the injury has been present for many weeks, months or years. The Laser also produces a soothing warmth into the area which can immediately relieve pain. Finally, it’s the only technology that allows for a more complete healing to take place quicker, with less scar tissue formation.

Spinal Impulse Adjusting Treatment

For misalignments in the spine, our Spinal Impulse Adjusting technology can help to encourage the spine back into its correct alignment especially when your treatment is informed by our imaging analysis. If you have a misalignment in your body this can cause areas of the spine to become compromised as more pressure is being placed on certain points in the spine that aren’t designed to cope with that increased weight. With time, this leads to the inevitable failure of the body’s ability to deal with the stress forces and a symptomatic injury occurs.

As humans we have an optimal alignment for our spine that can help with absorbing impact when we perform our daily activities, so if our bodies are out of alignment this can significantly increase the risk of injury. This therapy is usually used in conjunction with our other therapies to optimise the way that our body distributes the weight that gravity places on our spine.

The Right Time For Rehabilitative Exercises

So once any of these treatments have been performed and your body is beginning its healing journey, you may have reduced pain coupled with an increased range of movement as a result of this. Now, exercises can be introduced to aid this process further. Exercises are an integral part of healing to rehabilitate the spine and should be used in order to strengthen the muscles that support the spine and prevent an injury from reoccurring. Strengthening the muscles can help to stabilise the spine and alleviate pressure from the spinal discs, while performing daily exercises can help to increase mobility to relieve stiffness. It can also help to increase the circulation which can again help an injured area to recover by distributing nutrients into the area, to help further your recovery.

So if you’ve been suffering with back pain for a number of weeks, months or years, maybe you’ve tried using exercises as rehabilitation for your spine but the problem persists, or you’ve tried any methods of recovery that your GP has recommended, at The Mayfair Clinic we can offer you an individual approach to recovery. Our treatments use groundbreaking technology to offer you the best therapies for whatever injury you’re experiencing.
