Neck pain is a very common complaint of our patients. It is usually caused by the way we use our necks. Working all day bent over looking at a computer, poor posture, driving long distances and, tiredness and stress can all lead to neck pain. Even sleeping can cause a stiff neck sometimes, so there doesn’t seem like any place in our lives where we can escape neck pain. However, with the treatments available from The Mayfair Clinic for neck pain, you don’t need to avoid it, just come to us for quick relief from neck pain. Before we look at our treatments for neck pain, let’s first take a closer look at neck pain and find out what causes it.

What is neck pain?

There are three forms of neck pain. Firstly, a muscular neck pain. This is where the muscles tighten in the neck and cause stiffness and pain. You then have neck joint pain. This is where something affects one of the spinal joints in your neck; this can also cause stiffness and pain. Finally, you have nerve pain. This occurs when a nerve in your neck becomes trapped and causes pain in your neck and down your arms. Along with pain, this can also cause pins and needles and numbness

Some people can also experience neck pain when they have a headache. This is due to a tension in the head and neck which irritates small nerves and blood vessels giving “referred pain”. Osteoarthritis and other wear and tear conditions can also cause a muscular neck pain. This pain can sometimes move into the shoulder too, but it depends on where in the neck is affected.

In most neck pain cases, you will typically suffer an element of muscular pain. However, in 99% of cases this is a response to a joint injury or condition, if you are really unlucky, it can also cause a trapped nerve too. This is, of course, rare, but it can happen. So, now you know the different types of neck pain, let’s see how osteopathy can help treat these neck pains.

How can osteopathy help with neck pain?

Osteopathy uses a range of manipulations that can help with neck pain. Which manipulations are used in your treatment typically depends on your age, fitness level and the diagnosis of the condition causing your neck pain. The aim is to improve the movement of the joints, reduce the stiffness of the muscles or release the tension causing a trapped nerve.

A traditional osteopath treats these ailments with gentle manipulation. Basically, they move your neck and “click” it. They also use a technique known as “High-Velocity Thrust”. This is a specific movement technique used by osteopaths & chiropractors to reduce symptoms of neck pain (and pain caused by other spinal joints)

The treatments from osteopaths are different for each individual, not each individual condition. The reason for this is that people will often have other areas where they need work too. Once the treatment has been completed, a traditional osteopath will then advise you how you can limit the chances of neck pain returning. They will give you exercises to perform and advice on improving your posture, for example.

The treatments from The Mayfair Clinic for neck pain

So, that’s what traditional osteopathy can do to help with your neck pain. However, The Mayfair Clinic can do a lot more, thanks to the technology we use. We use the latest forms of osteopathic technologies to help our patients with neck pain. Although our philosophy & principles are similar to other osteopaths, we are able to perform and repeat them far more accurately & effectively than a traditional osteopath thanks to the machines we use. Let’s take a look at our treatments for neck pain and find out more.

Our treatments are a lot like the manipulations from other osteopaths, only we use the latest technology making neck treatment more effective with less risk of soreness afterwards. We use this osteopathic technology because it allows us to be far more precise and repeat the treatments accurately for consistent healing results. Once we have pinpointed the site of the issue using a physical exam and special tests, we can then accurately treat it using the following:

Laser Therapy – laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment that speeds up the blood flow to the site of your pain. This increased blood flow delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the area and speeds up recovery time. Laser is also shown in the research to increase the metabolism of cells and allow for more complete healing with less scar tissue. This is thanks to the photochemical reactions it causes inside your body’s cells.

Spinal Impulse Adjusting – Spinal impulse adjusting is a highly effective treatment that we use for freeing stiff joints, adjusting alignment issues in the spine and targeting specific areas of your spine. It works brilliantly on neck pain. Compared to the twisting techniques used by traditional Osteopaths, this is much more comfortable for you as a patient whilst providing repeatable and measurable improvements in neck joint stiffness

Spinal Decompression – Spinal decompression is a treatment typically used to treat disc conditions in the spine. It works great on the discs in your neck and also for trapped nerves. It is basically a safer and faster version of the traditional manipulations used by other osteopaths and a favorite amongst patients with both neck pain & back pain.
