What Exactly Is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain experienced typically in the lower back, down to the buttocks, and the backs of each leg where the sciatic nerve is located. People suffering with sciatica may not only experience pain, but a mixture of sensations such as tingling, weakness or burning radiating into those areas as well. Rather than being a condition in its own right, sciatica is symptom of a potentially deeper medical condition such as a slipped disc, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease. The sciatic nerve begins in the lower back and extends all the way down to the toes in numerous branches, so symptoms of sciatica usually occur when this nerve is pinched at its origin in the lower back. Our first step would be completing an examination with you to determine the symptoms, followed by imaging if needed to confirm what the underlying cause of sciatica is before beginning treatment.

Sciatica causes “Piriformis Syndrome”, not the other way around.

Sciatica is one of the most common conditions we see here, and for most people the problem stems from a disc injury in the lower two discs of your spine (L4-5 or L5-S1). One of the biggest misconceptions of sciatica is that it’s pain originating in the piriformis muscle, but by treating this muscle or the legs themselves where the pain is located, the problem is never going to be solved as you’re not treating the true cause. Because the Piriformis is controlled by these nerves, if the sciatic nerve is injured in the lower back, Piriformis can go into spasm. This common mistake is often made by practitioners, and although it may feel nice to have the piriformis worked on, it is a tremendously short term approach.

The best approach to the treatment of sciatica is one that targets the injury.

Our approach involves using our equipment to target the exact area of where the underlying cause of sciatica is located. One of the most effective treatments for doing so is Spinal Decompression as it is able to target discs in the lumbar spine which frequently are the cause of sciatic pain. Spinal Decompression uses two very small measurements of your body weight to apply a gentle stretch and release onto the discs in your lower back to alleviate the pressure on the compressed nerve. This can relieve pain almost immediately in some cases.

The gentle, slow pumping action can allow vital nutrients to penetrate the discs in order to help the healing process in an injury and help to over time rehydrate the discs. Rehydrating the discs can be a vital part of treating various conditions such as degenerative disc disease, where the discs have become dehydrated over time – this impacts their flexibility and height which can increase the risk of injury to the spine as it’s less cushioned.

Years of bad posture can contribute to recurrent sciatic pain

By completing our examination with you in the first instance, we will also be able to gauge an idea as to how your spine is positioned. Very often injuries to discs can occur gradually as a result of years of bad posture, by correcting the position of your spine we can also reduce the risk of an injury recurring or the return of sciatica symptoms in the future.

Believe it or not, or spines are designed to be positioned in a certain way in order to shock-absorb the forces that we subject our bodies to on a daily basis, from the way that we carry things, to the way that we walk or run. Over time it is possible to lose the natural curve of your spine which can leave us much more prone to injury as more pressure is put onto delicate areas of not just the spine but other areas of the body as well. Our Spinal Impulse Adjusting Technology allows us to target specific areas of the spine that you may be experiencing stiffness and encourage the spine back into better alignment and more mobility.

We can help even the most chronic Sciatica sufferers.

So, what if even by this point you’re still thinking there may not be a cure for you because you’ve seemingly tried everything in the past? Whether you’ve had sciatica for a few weeks to decades, we have a solution for you. For cases of sciatica that have existed for months or years, our K Laser therapy can be a useful tool in helping you finally achieve relief, plus it combines fantastically with the other therapies. K Laser uses light technology to target an injury deep into the cells. The laser increases the cell activity to help increase the circulation through the development of new blood vessels which can revitalise the healing in an area that has been injured for an extended period of time.

It also produces a soothing warmth that our patients love. Those undergoing laser therapy may also benefit from combining this with one of our other therapies in order to speed up the healing process as it can help effectively with reducing inflammation. Laser therapy can help to achieve a more complete healing of an injury, which is the first step towards preventing a recurrence of the problem or relapse of symptoms in the long-term.
