Back pain can be a difficult problem to deal with, especially when it comes to your mental health. We see so many cases in the clinic where a patient has been struggling with back pain for weeks, months, years or even decades. Waking up with pain everyday is not just physically draining but also mentally difficult, as it can certainly seem like those pain free days are a thing of the past.

Why Back Pain Happens

If you understand better why you’re struggling with back pain, you may be able to better make a decision on how you choose to deal with the problem. Back pain essentially occurs as a failure of your back to deal with load on a daily basis. Your spine is naturally aligned in a way that allows it to effectively distribute the weight of your body, as well as that of gravity bearing down on it everyday. If your spine deviates from this natural alignment, which can happen if you’re frequently adopting poor posture while at work or relaxing at home, then your spine can no longer transmit these forces evenly. More pressure gets placed on areas of the spine that aren’t designed to cope with that amount of weight, pockets of degeneration develop and the discs squash or bulge out as a result. This is how the majority of back pain cases start. Obviously there are cases of back pain where the patient has experienced a one-off trauma that has caused their problem, but we don’t tend to see a huge amount of these cases. There’s a very simple reason for this, that if a one-off trauma causes you back pain and you didn’t generally suffer with it before, your spine can likely heal itself well because it’s not under the kind of pressure that continually prevents it from healing. We’ll go more into depth on what you can do if you’re struggling with back pain later.

Back Pain & Mental Health

There is research to suggest that if you’re struggling with back pain everyday rather than having a one-off incident that’s caused the problem, you’re likely to struggling more with mental health as a result. It can be incredibly lonely to wake up with back pain everyday, even if you have an understanding family. What often makes the problem worse is feeling like there’s no cure out there that works for you. What’s worse is that they often find over time as the pain becomes more constant, they gradually have to give up more and more of the activities they loved to do, because they simply don’t have the energy or it causes them too much pain. We see so many cases where the problem has been ongoing for a long period of time, who’ve tried everything under the sun to help fix the problem, but go on to have great success with the treatment or our Back In Shape program. We’ll explain more of what our Back In Shape program entails, but if you are a Premium member you can gain access to our Facebook group with our practitioners, as well as other members who are currently going through the program. The group frequently shares achievements, goals and questions as well as just the comfort of being amongst people who are going through the same journey as you.

How To Fix Back Pain

If you’re not sure what you can be doing or you’ve tried many different approaches, we have so many possible options for you to start getting better. Here at The Mayfair Clinic we deal with patients everyday who’ve been struggling with their back pain. If you live in London and are looking for a thorough examination process as well as treatments and rehabilitation that help to prime your body to heal more completely, do consider booking in for an examination here at the clinic. We’re currently running a special offer on our initial consultations here in the clinic, so if you would like to learn more you can do so here. If you’re not able to get into the clinic, we have our Back In Shape membership area, which is accessible for free for Phase 1, or at £21.99 a month for the Premium membership. The free Phase 1 section is ideal for anyone in a lot of pain and struggling to move around, but it also provides a great foundation to move straight onto Phase 2 if you’re able to move around and start the strengthening work. The Premium membership gives you access to the rest of the content, including guided rehabilitation through Phases 2 and 3, to help you know when to progress the exercises, what stretches to pair with the protocol as well as access to the Facebook group. Sadly there are no quick fixes to back pain, so if you are looking for a way to get rid of the pain quickly – for example painkillers, injections or surgery – these are not sufficient steps on their own and require the rehabilitation to be done in order to see long-term results.

Back pain recovery is also not a linear process, as many people would likely believe it to be. When we get a cut on the hand for example, it scabs and heals over if we leave it alone. However, if you happen to re-open the cut or you pick the scab off, the healing process starts all over again. In our Back In Shape area, we teach you what you need to avoid doing in order to prevent the injury from relapsing, but at the same time it’s not possible to wrap you up in cotton wool to avoid getting injured. It’s likely you might do something that results in a setback at some point, but the important thing to remember is that as long as you’re making steady improvements, you’re not the same person that you were when you first started the rehabilitation. By doing the rehabilitation you’re making it possible for your body to recover quicker than before from setbacks, so don’t be discouraged if you do happen to experience one.
